Snow has fallen right across the Alps this week and as you’d expect, the skiing is generally excellent. Wintry weather with temperatures way below freezing across the whole region further helps the great skiing condition. Austria and Switzerland have the greatest amount of fresh snow but France and Italy have similarly good skiing.
The Ski Club rep at Soldeu at Andorra reported lovely powder skiing on Wednesday after a good snowfall overnight.
A light dusting of snow has fallen at most of the Ski Club featured Scottish resorts and further snowfall is expected over the weekend. This should boost their snow depths once more.
Last weeks snowstorms in western America continue to provide some amazing powder skiing in resorts ranging from Jackson Hole to Snowbird and Squaw Valley. There is also better news on the east coast as it has turned colder and snowier. 30cm of fresh snow fell at Stowe on Wednesday 27th January.
Olympic preparations are well underway at Whistler now. It also continues to snow there and they are very close to passing ten metres of snow so far this season. Further inland it is drier and the rep at Banff says they need some more fresh snow now.
AUSTRIA
It was snowing again in Austria on Thursday. Lots of places received around 10cm to 20cm for the first runs of the day, providing some great powder skiing.
FRANCE
It’s snowing again in most of France. Between 1cm and 15cm fell on Wednesday night at most resort in the French Alps and provided some excellent skiing on Thursday.
SWITZERLAND
As at other alpine areas fresh snow has fallen in Switzerland.
ITALY
The Milky Way is the best place for powder skiing in Italy at the moment. Bardonecchia (110/160cm) received 20cm of fresh snow over the course of Tuesday night, 26th January but the best of the fresh snow is up at Sestriere (100/180cm) where it is colder. Piste conditions are excellent and the fresh snow means powder can be found off piste.
ANDORRA
The Ski Club rep at Soldeu in Grandvalira (60/100cm) reported 10cm of new snow landing through Tuesday night, 26th January. As a result the riding has been on fantastically light powder snow as the wind has only been light. The fresh cover alongside the snow fences on Rossinyol was nice and deep, if you are looking for where it’s deepest.
NORWAY / SWEDEN
It was snowing at Oppdal (30/50cm) on Thursday 27th January, with around 10cm falling over the course of the day. This came as a welcome relief for them as the resorts hasn’t received much snow recently. Only half the lifts were open on Thursday however due to strong winds and poor visibility due to the snowfall.
In Sweden fresh snow fell at both Åre (48/66cm) and Sälen (48/50cm) between Monday 25th and Thursday 28th January.
GERMANY
More snow has fallen in Germany, enhancing the skiing conditions.
BULGARIA
Light dustings of fresh snow have fallen at Bansko (100/125cm) this week, topping up the packed snow cover on piste and freshening up the off-piste conditions.
SCOTLAND
A light dusting of new snow fell across the upper slopes at Cairngorm (40/150cm) on Wednesday night. The lower slopes are a little wet due to the recent mild conditions and variable cover can be expected off piste. The good news is that further snowfall is expected as we move over the weekend which should again improve the conditions.
USA
Skiing at The Canyons (122/132cm) is excellent at the moment, following the recent snowstorms. Over a metre and a half of fresh snow fell last week turning the area into a powder paradise. 17 of their 20 lifts are running and their steep terrain still has some deep untracked powder on. Cold weather should be keeping the snow in amazing condition.
CANADA
Kimberley (130cm) received 4cm of fresh snow on Tuesday 26th January. This helped freshen up the piste conditions which were a little hard. All the area is open and the 4cm of fresh snow will have created some nice tree runs.
