It was a great ski weekend in Europe, with sunny weather and generally low temperatures. Snow conditions are good.
In contrast to the sunny weekend, it was snowing in Austria on Monday. Some places received up to 15cm of fresh snow even down at 1000m, which is excellent for this time of year.
The very cold weather in France last week has eased now and it is a lot warmer everywhere. Avoriaz offers some brilliant spring skiing at the moment, with softer snow in the afternoon. The sun is shining so make sure you wear appropriate sun protection.
Passo Tonale in Italy received some fresh snow at the end of last week. All the higher areas offer great skiing, like Sestriere, Cervinia and Passo Tonale.
Nearly 10cm of fresh snow fell at Zermatt in Switzerland on Sunday night but Monday was a sunny day. Plenty of great skiing can be found in generally spring-like conditions, especially lower down. More warm weather is expected this week.
Over 40cm of fresh snow at Timberline in America made for a pretty awesome weekend there. Other resorts to receive lots of snow were Heavenly and Squaw Valley in California. Both received around 35cm of fresh snow.
It snowed loads in Revelstoke, Kicking Horse and Whistler in Canada over the weekend too. Around 50cm fell on Friday and Saturday at Revelstoke and Kicking Horse with similar amounts at Whistler on Saturday and Sunday.
AUSTRIA
There was some great skiing on offer in Austria over the weekend with many resorts receiving a dusting of snow on Sunday 14th March. Ski Club reps in resorts across the country said conditions were great, even down low.
FRANCE
A light dusting of snow fell at the Espace Killy resorts of Tignes (122/195cm) and Val d’Isere (122/195cm) on Monday morning. Around 1cm fell at both resorts which was enough to give a fresh feel to the pistes. The whole ski area is open with some excellent skiing on offer, especially high up.
SWITZERLAND
As with most of Europe, it was a generally dry and sunny in Switzerland over the weekend which made for some great spring skiing. Temperatures remain fairly low still which is good news for the snow. Milder weather is forecast for the end of the week which is likely to bring rain to the lower slopes although snow could fall higher up.
ITALY
The weekend was dominated by sunny skies in Italy. The temperature remained fairly low so the snow is in great condition as well.
ANDORRA
Andorra enjoyed a sunny and generally cool weekend, which was perfect to enjoy the fresh snow they received last week. The mild and sunny weather has turned the snow a bit soft on the lower slopes and the upper slopes are now fairly hard at Soldeu (90/130cm). However the slopes aren’t busy so it is a great time to practice your carving turns.
NORWAY & SWEDEN
Oppdal (60/80cm), Norway, is in superb shape following 30cm of fresh snow falling over the weekend, 20cm of which fell on Sunday night in time for visitors on Monday morning. Åre (73/89cm) in Sweden is also blessed with fresh snow. 17cm of snow has fallen on the higher slopes this weekend, with 6cm landing lower down at Björnen. A light dusting fell through Sunday night across the ski area providing a lovely fresh cover for visitors on Monday 15th March.
GERMANY
It’s snowing again in Germany on Monday 15th March. Between 1cm and 10cm has fallen in all the Ski Club featured resorts.
BULGARIA
Bulgaria’s recent hot and sunny weather seems to have disappeared now and piste conditions are a lot better as a result. It snowed last week at all three of the Ski Club featured Bulgarian resorts which also improved things.
SCOTLAND
Some fresh snow has fallen in Scotland although this has not been enough to dramatically alter the riding conditions. The weather on Monday 15th March was also mild, bringing some wet weather to the ski areas making the lower slopes softer.
USA
43cm of fresh snow fell up at Timberline (323cm) on Friday 12th March, giving them an awesome powder day. The powder was quite heavy as it fell, as the temperature was around 0°C. Still, with over three metres of snow on the mountain there are plenty of skiing opportunities both on and off piste.
CANADA
Winter finally returned in Canada over the weekend as places like Revelstoke (217cm) and Kicking Horse (194cm) received loads of snow. Saturday 13th March was a powder day at both of them as up to 50cm of snow fell over the course of Friday 12th and Saturday 13th March. Lots of powder can be found all over the mountain, especially in the trees where it is waist deep in lots of places.
